It’s the weekend! So no snaps of commuter trains, reports, meetings…
Place of the day: Heptonstall
We went for a day trip across to Hebden Bridge and the village of Heptonstall in West Yorkshire. Poet and writer Sylvia Plath is buried there in the St Thomas the Apostle Church graveyard. The epitaph reads “Even amidst fierce flames the golden lotus can be planted”, attributed, I understand, to The Bhagavad-Gita. Poignantly, Plath visited husband Ted Hughes’s parents in Heptonstall and wrote about the setting in “November Graveyard” (a recording of the poet reading it is available, search online). Full disclosure, my images of the village came out badly, so have used a stock photo!
The one in a café that I did not have to prepare myself, of course.
P.S. Love peashoots because they make everything taste like green spring.
Because it’s a non-working day, there’s more time for writing. Yet more editing – yay!
No substitute for printing off the text to check, I’ve found, reading aloud as you go. Alas, not very eco-friendly…
Blossom of the day:
Yes, lilac time is drawing to a close (here in northern Europe). Here’s a last hurrah out in the garden, most already are singed with brown and shrunken. That means it’s June, and here comes summer.
Household tip of the day #1 – and #last:
Barkeeper’s Friend and an old toothbrush to clean the bathroom tiles.
No, I do not like cleaning, but it’s satisfying having cleaned…
Pleasure bombs of the day:
Amidst the domestic chores and responsibilities, scatter the days with little ‘bombs’ of sensual pleasure: fresh coffee; something that smells delicious for the bath or shower; a glass of fizz; dark chocolate; time and a corner in which to read a book, or with the papers… Berries – or something that’s in season now.
It’s easier at the weekend… Make sure you save a treat for Sunday night to stave off that back-to-school feeling.
To share their day in pictures, I nominate: anyone who wants to pick up the challenge… (sorry, hope that’s not cheating too much).
I love the bombs of the day 💕✌️ What we’d do without them? 🙂

I love the suggestion to save a treat for Sunday night. Way too often I have the “back-to-school” feeling at the end of a weekend. Great pics too!

It’s always fun viewing a day in the life pictures. Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately seeing Sylvia Plath’s stone wasn’t fun. Such a sad ending to someone so talented. I need to go there sometime so I can place a flower on her stone.

Thank you. It is very sad, when you see the dates and think of her short life, though what she gifted us before she left.
There are flowers there always, and pots of pens. I’ve heard reports that it’s neglected – I think that maybe because it’s a windswept and exposed place. However, it does make me feel a little bit more sad to think of her buried far away from home and family.

I wonder why that is? I’d be curious to know why they chose that particular site for her burial? ?

Her husband Ted Hughes’s family was from the area. However, Ted Hughes is buried in Devon, where they and later he lived, some 250 miles away. It’s also a controversial choice given he left Plath before she died. In the past, the surname ‘Hughes’ has been scratched from her headstone in protest (and re-etched), as you’re probably aware.

My (former) realtor used to say Barkeeper’s Friend is good for pots and pans too.
